Every morning at about 6.00 I start my day with a cup of strong coffee, which I drink at my computer while checking my e-mails. At about 7.00 my wife and I take a fairly brisk walk along the beach. This normally takes about 45-50 minutes. Back home, I shower then have breakfast, which is usually a healthy smoothie consisting of one red apple, two large carrots, half a cup of blueberries and a spoonful of vitamin C (that’s for two people). This natural healthy food drink, taken regularly, adds value to my eyes, brain, heart and immune system.

Snacks

By about mid morning I am starting to feel hungry. Most times I’ll have a healthy homemade biscuit and a cup of coffee. I don’t eat bought biscuits, usually made with highly processed ingredients but I enjoy one with my tea or coffee so I make my own. I use wholemeal flour mixed with brown rice flour, rice bran oil, cinnamon and natural stevia for sweetness. One egg binds the ingredients and the fillers can range from chopped peanuts, walnuts, and cranberries. I DO NOT use white flour, white sugar or salt.JoyBauer.com

Main Meals

Since my wife and I work from home, we have our main meal in the middle of the day.

Our normal meals would include any of the following: Fish, raw or grilled; skinless chicken. These can be stir-fried or baked using rice bran oil. For salads I use olive oil or balsamic vinegar as a dressing. Vegetables may include broccoli, carrots, spinach, brussel sprouts lightly steamed. Onions and sweet potatoes I usually roast or steam. All meals exclude salt, potatoes and white bread.

The above ingredients can be combined to make countless different meals and are designed to aid good health with a healthy supply of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, protein and a healthy balance of carbohydrates.

What is  high Blood Pressure

In most instances the reason for high blood pressure is unknown, but one that is known and can be treated, is when the  artery to the kidney narrows so the kidney sends out hormones to increase the blood flow. Hence the blood pressure rises.

The instance of narrowing arteries is a fairly small percentage of high blood pressure cases. Most often the reasons individuals have high blood pressure are unknown  although anyone with an ounce of common sense can probably guess some of the causes e.g. heavy drinking, smoking, stress, over weight, high salt use, bad eating habits to name just a few.

Most Doctors will prescribe medication to lower blood pressure but that only hides the problem and does not explain the reason of why a person’s blood pressure is high. We need to find out what is causing the problem and in many cases we don’t need a doctor to tell us as who knows our lifestyle better than us.

If your problem is over weight, exercise more and cut out salt as it blocks your arteries and retains water. Most importantly, eat healthy foods and by healthy I mean  lots of dark leafy greens like broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts, kale, silver beet and include garlic and onions, leeks, sweet potatoes, chicken breast, turkey. Use plenty of turmeric and cinnamon in your cooking and eat loads of salads. For breakfast eat oats (porridge).

Don’t eat white bread, it has no food value and clogs up your gut. Use wholemeal bread instead and train yourself not to eat potatoes. Instead replace it with sweet potatoes.
Use no sugar and cut out soft drinks of any kind, they are saturated with sugar. Refrain from buying fast foods and processed foods in packets or boxes; they are coated with sugar, salt, unhealthy fats and ingredients you cannot pronounce. Keep away from too much coffee

Measure your own blood pressure. The monitors are fairly inexpensive; check them out at Mypix , they have a couple of models under the heading of electronic gadgets. The instruction book that comes with it will give you an idea of what your blood pressure should be.
Note: It is important to be aware that  very high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, strokes, and heart attacks. Regular checkups with your GP are important.

High Cholesterol
In the western world cholesterol is a hot topic. There is a lot of controversy in the medical world about it. Hundreds of thousands of people are taking statins to reduce their level of cholesterol and many doctors believe that taking statins puts a person in more danger than the high cholesterol itself.
What we do know is that statins block magnesium and CO Q10, both of which are needed by the heart and the brain. If you are taking statins, talk to your doctor about supplements to counter the side affects.

This isn’t something that happens over night, it’s been a gradual climb adding a little here and a little there and, before you know it, you are no longer that slim  person you used to be. I know because it happened to me. It all started a few years back when I no longer had to run around seeing staff and clients all over the city, burning up energy and thinking I was leading a fairly healthy lifestyle.

As time went by my business began to expand and my time was demanded in the office more and more. I failed to notice that my stomach was slowly getting larger. I’m not one to look at myself in the mirror much at all so I suppose I turned a blind eye to the change.

However, one can’t bury one’s head in the sand forever and one day it hit me. I had a pot belly. And I’m not even a beer drinker. I quickly found out that getting rid of a fat belly at my age (mature) was not something that could be done easily. In fact I was told that it was likely to take as many months or years as it took to put it on, to get it off.

Doing some research

I soon found out that I posed a risk of getting diabetes or having a stroke. Needless to say, having done the research I was not about to leave it there. Something had to be done, even though I knew it was going to take a long time.
I went back to the computer and searched Google to see what I could find. You may have done the same and you will know that you soon find loads of sites promising you will lose that belly fat in 10 days or whatever number they came up with. What a load of rubbish, you simply can’t get rid of  belly fat with pills, diet or even exercise, unless you are young and then it’s unlikely you have a big tummy anyway.

Research soon made me realise that an immediate life change was required. I would need to exercise regularly, at least a 30 minute walk each day, as a minimum and change my eating habits.

For me the decision was easy. I simply had no choice. It was either change, or risk diabetes or worse.

I’ve always been a relatively fit person and yet I found myself in this position. I told myself it simply wouldn’t do, I needed to change.

I researched cholesterol

Also foods and herbs that would help lower my weight and reduce blood sugar levels and high cholesterol levels. I did not mention that after having some blood tests my doctor said I was bordering on diabetes. What a wake up call that was.

I’ve always been into cooking, and to learn new ways of doing meals and changing recipes, I’d take on the challenge with a renewed enthusiasm for something I really enjoy doing.

One of the first actions I took was to change the direction of this site from being focused on creating a lifestyle to creating a healthy lifestyle through the foods we eat.

I had a considerable amount of fun trying and testing new recipes using healthy ingredients and each one is my own creation. Pleasingly, the book been doing well and my hope is that it will help others with similar problems to change to a healthy  lifestyle before it’s too late.

I’ve gotten a little behind in writing articles for this site as I have been writing another e-book called ‘How to retire in your 30’s 40’s 50’s 60’s’ which also can be found on Amazon. (Get that bit of promotion in while I can)

One of the jobs that took so long to research was finding enough information on healthy ingredients, including herbs. I wanted to know if they would lower blood sugar levels or reduce cholesterol levels and subsequently improve my healthy lifestyle and that included eyes, brain and immune system. My next book will introduce you to the world’s very best foods, herbs and spices, explaining why they are the best and just what they are doing for you. I look forward to introducing it within the next few weeks.
